Dubai completes Dh9.5m heritage trails project linking Deira’s historic markets
More than 500 shops benefit from major development works
DUBAI – Dubai Municipality has announced the completion of a landmark heritage development project in Deira, unveiling three tourist trails that stretch across the historic Grand Souq.
Costing Dh9.5 million, the initiative covers 1,784 metres and benefits over 500 shops, enhancing both the cultural experience for visitors and the economic prospects of local traders.
The project forms part of Dubai Municipality’s ongoing heritage protection strategy, reinforcing the emirate’s cultural identity while complementing the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. By connecting traditional markets with authentic architectural landmarks, the trails create an immersive journey into the heart of Dubai’s history.
New tourist trails
The three trails include the Gold Souq Trail (995 metres), the Al Ahmadiya School Heritage Axis (430 metres), and the Spice Souq Axis (359 metres).
Together, they span 25,800 square metres, weaving through seven traditional markets: the Herbs Market, Spice Souq, Utensils Souq, Perfume Market, Carpets Market, Textiles Souq, and Household Market, in addition to the Gold Souq and the Al Ahmadiya heritage area.
Visitors now find a seamless route that blends commerce, culture, and history, connecting vibrant market activity with historic sites that reflect the city’s legacy.
How were spaces improved?
The project delivered extensive urban upgrades, including three newly developed public squares with seating areas and amenities. Shading structures now cover 210 square metres, with an additional 200-square-metre canopy behind Bin Naeem Mosque.
Market façades have been enhanced with upgraded lighting, while navigation has been simplified with 38 column-mounted signboards and 154 floor markings. Pavements covering 770 square metres were upgraded to improve pedestrian flow, making the markets more accessible and visually appealing.

To maintain the cultural authenticity of Deira’s markets, the Municipality restored wooden shading and employed local materials such as sarooj, a traditional lime-based plaster. These enhancements preserve the character of the historic souqs while improving comfort and usability for both residents and tourists.
Bader Anwahi, CEO of the Public Facilities Agency at Dubai Municipality, said: “Deira, with its heritage and traditional markets, is an inseparable part of Dubai’s cultural and historical identity. This project honours that deep-rooted legacy while keeping pace with the present and future.”
He added that the trails highlight Dubai’s global standing as a cultural hub, offering experiences where heritage, culture, and commerce converge, while boosting the local economy and supporting traders.
